Help raise vital funds for vital educational and support services for autistic children and their parents
As the mother of an autistic daughter, Lady Astor of Hever knows all about the hassle and heartache involved in trying to locate and obtain the best in educational, pastoral and other support services. Unfortunately this is an area desperately under-funded – and things are set to get worse given the growing numbers of cases of autism being diagnosed.
You can do your part to help by joining Lady Astor on her intrepid fund-raising trek to Inner Mongolia on behalf of the National Autistic Society (NAS) - the first of its kind to visit this fascinating and elusive part of the world.
The objective is to raise money for three specific areas of practical support: • The Helen Allison School in Meopham, Kent • The EarlyBird Scheme - a support group for parents who are still reeling from the shock of the first diagnosis. • The new Advocacy service that was set up last year on behalf of parents who have to battle with their local authority to obtain the correct education provision and which costs over £100,000 a year to run.
There are still a few places left and there is an open invitation to anyone who would like to join the trek which take place from 9th - 18th September 2001. The idea is to walk approximately 12 miles a day - often in areas where westerners are seldom seen - through a diverse range of fascinating terrains, ranging from mountains and sand gorges to grasslands and the banks of the mighty Yellow River. Accommodation will be in cheap but clean hotels and there will be the chance to sample fine local cuisine such as mutton and goat accompanied by yak's milk and Mongolian beer.
The criteria for signing up are: a reasonable level of fitness (but not to extreme as there will be a doctor accompanying the party) guaranteed sponsorship of at least £1300 - plus a further £1200 to fund the trip.
For more details contact Sharon West at the NAS on tel: 020 7903 5331 email: swest@nas.org.uk
