Coroner contacts car seat manufacturers about safety concerns

Home
So concerned was Worcestershire based Coroner, Dr Nigel Garbutt, about the facts that emerged during one of his recent cases, that he is writing to all UK baby car seat manufacturers. Dr Garbutt is anxious to ensure that, wherever possible, manufacturers’ fixing instructions stay permanently attached to child seats. His urgent call to action has been motivated over his concerns following a tragic accident in which a seven month old boy died. It appears that while the baby was safely strapped into his child seat, the seat itself had probably not been properly secured according to recommended guidelines - quite possibly because they were not available to consult.

As a result of the mistake, Daniel Sheward sadly lost his life in a crash with a minibus which an accident investigator for West Mercia police later described as ‘perfectly survivable.‘ In writing personally to all manufacturers, Dr Garbutt is attempting to encourage manufacturers to make sure their instructions remain to hand at all times. As he is anxious to point out, ‘These devices are bought and sold on the second-hand market and the full safety instructions should be permanently fixed to the seat so there’s no reliance on a loose instruction leaflet.’
