Fear of poverty forces young Indian mother to try to murder newborn baby

Home
In a bid to reduce the financial burden on her family, a desperate teenager mother tried to throw one of her new-born twin daughters from a 50 foot high window at the Calcutta hospital where she gave birth.

Ironically the rejected infant survived, having suffered minor cuts and bruises when trees broke her fall, but her sister subsequently fell ill and later died.

The surviving baby is now in the custody of her in-laws while her mother is under police guard.

In defence of her actions, the young mother said, ‘What should I have done with two daughters? We are so poor, how could we bring them up? That was the fear in my mind.’

India is an environment which continues to favour male children, much to the horror of the developed world. Female infanticide and foeticide still runs at a high rate and sex-determination clinics are becoming increasingly popular.
