Freezing babies’ umbilical cords could save their lives in later years

For £600, parents can take steps to protect their children from ill health in later life.

This is what it cost to arrange for a biotechnological company called Cryo-Care to extract blood from a newborn’s umbilical cord and keep it in cold storage for anything up to 20 years.

The appeal in taking such a step lies in the fact that the umbilical cord contains stem cells which have the potential to form any tissue or organ, depending on the ‘instructions’ received by the body. If they can be accessed and used to replace unhealthy cells, they may be the key to a ‘miracle cure’ or to provide ‘spare parts’ for a number of life threatening disorders such as diabetes, leukaemia, Parkinsons or multiple sclerosis.

Dr Derek Tuffnell is a gynaecologist at Bradford Royal Infirmary taking part in the Cryo-Care project. He explains the potential long term implications, saying, ‘If a child or adolescent gets a disorder, for example leukaemia, their stem cells will give us the means to replenish their bodies with healthy blood and save their lives.’

He goes on, ‘And who know what we will be able to do with stem cells in 20 years? It might not be a cure for everything, but it’s likely to be a significant improvement over other options.’
