Further evidence of child obesity revealed

Following a spate of reports voicing concern about the increasing number of overweight children, a new survey has just been published in the British Medical Journal which further reinforces all previous data.

Children from 10 primary schools were studied by the Leeds Community and Mental Health Trust. Researchers found, overall, 22% of the children were overweight, with 11% of the girls and 12% of the boys technically obese.

Once again researchers blame the prevalence of indoor computer-based games which encourage children to lead a more sedentary lifestyle in conjunction with parental fears over letting them range around outside by themselves to play or ride bikes.

Pinki Sahota, senior lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics from Leeds Metropolitan University is quoted in The Telegraph as saying the findings are ‘a cause for concern.’ Her recommendations to the government include the provision of more affordable exercise facilities for families and more action on the part of schools to educate children on the health risks associated with obesity.
