Half term takes its toll on the roads

Home
Bad weather over the February half term holiday resulted in a spate of road accidents across Europe. Several school trips ended in disaster, with a number of coaches carrying children to and from group ski holidays crashing after skidding out of control.

One crash took place in France, putting three children and their teacher in hospital. Two crashes also took place in Austria, with one boy taken to hospital suffering a fractured pelvis, along with nine other children and their teacher.
The safety, or otherwise, of school trips has been well publicised of late, following the release of an official accident report into a boating tragedy at the Royal Navy sailing centre, Portsmouth. An accident eighteen months ago claimed the life of a nine year old girl, Victoria Bee, who died holding hands with her twin sister, Elizabeth. Elizabeth survived but has never been able to speak about what happened and the entire family has been severely affected by their loss.

The report found that the vessel used on the day was ‘grossly overloaded, the teacher in charge untrained and supervision on board at best, lax, and at worst, non existent.’

The school no longer runs such sailing trips.
