Is your school boy-friendly?

Home
Nowadays we are aware that boys and girls are different and we are even allowed to admit it in polite company. One of the ways in which they differ is in learning styles, particularly when they are very young.

Whilst most little girls’ bodies are hard at work developing brain power, boys’ bodies are otherwise engaged, developing muscle strength. It can be a challenge for the boys when early schooling involves such delicate tasks as cutting, colouring, sticking and sitting still. Their little bodies are straining to get on the move – sitting still and paying attention are a low priority when there are superheroes to emulate.

The important thing to recognise is that they are not naughty, they are just different and a school that recognises this is a wise one indeed.

Below are some questions to ask schools when considering where to send your son.

1. What choices do I have in starting my son later in school year when he is a bit older?

2. Do you have a “morning attendance only” system in foundation stage?

3. How many male teachers do you have and which classes do they teach?

4. What sporting activities are available to my son and how often are they offered?

5. How do you ensure that children are not discouraged if they struggle to master certain skills e.g. – reading and language development

6. My son seems to have boundless energy and finds it hard to sit still for long periods of time. How would this be handled in class?

Do not worry if they cannot answer them all positively – that’s life. Watch for their reactions though, and see if they seem to know what you are talking about when you discuss meeting the different needs of boys and girls. Good luck!
