Mother abandons three children in squalor to go on holiday

Home
A single mother who funded a holiday in Malta by selling her income support benefit book and cashing in her child benefit has been sent to prison for 15 months after admitting three counts of child cruelty. She left the country simply leaving a request to her mother on her front door to look after her three young children who had no idea she was going away.

The boys, aged five seven and 10, were duly taken in by their grandmother who had to organise a week’s holiday from work to care for them. When she went into her daughter’s home to find clean clothes for the children she found the house in a total state of neglect. There were no washing or cooking facilities, clean bedding or clothing. Rubbish bags, cigarette butts and broken glass were strewn everywhere and the gas meter had been removed owing to non payment of bills.

The judge who jailed the woman told her she had ’failed in basic hygiene, leaving the children with no clean clothes and unable to wash.’

The children have since been taken into care.
