Mother could be prosecuted for daughter’s recurrent lateness

A woman who ensures she drops her 12-year old daughter, Michelle, at school at 8.20am prompt every day could be liable for prosecution - just because the girl cannot get to up her classroom by 8.30am when the register is taken.

The school does not open until 8.25am and Michelle maintains that it takes longer than five minutes to get to her locker and then onto her form room.

Because Michelle has now missed the start of registration at her Bolton school on over 30 occassions, her mother, Elaine - former civil servant - has been sent a letter saying she could be fined up to two and a half thousand pounds or even sent to jail, following new legislation which took effect in March.

Mrs Massey finds the situation ridiculous. When interviewed by the Daily Mail she said, ‘I was horrified when I got the letter because Michelle’s education has always been extremely important to us. The school is insulting my ability as a parent by saying Michelle is not in school when I have just dropped her off. It makes you wonder how many other parents been caught out by this and how much public money is being wasted in referring all these cases to the council.’

Commented Michelle in the same interview, ‘I always walk into the classroom as the register is being taken, stopping at my locker on the way. I often arrive just as the register is being taken and sometimes the teacher will call out my name as I’m walking to my desk. There are always people who come in later than I do. I don’t want my mum to go to prison. I just want to go to school to learn.’
