Private fertility clinics have come in for a lot of criticism of late. They have been accused of malpractice, exploitation and only in it for the money.
One woman, Mary Sidebotham of Stockport, is one of several egg donors who has decided to put the record straight by talking publicly about her own recent experience, from which came nothing but good. A midwife by profession, Mrs Sidebotham, discovered the crying need for egg donors during the course of her work. She was shocked at the numbers of infertile couples who had to wait for anything up to five years for help owing to the dearth of available eggs. Her own family complete - she had three children of her own - Mary wasted no time in volunteering to donate, especially as she had witnessed at first hand the distress and suicide of a close relative who had been unable to have children.
She was very reassured by the thorough way the entire process was undertaken, saying, 'I was impressed by the fact that they didn't snap me up. I had to have counselling and was told to consider how I would feel afterwards. They asked me whether I wouldn't always look in every pram I passed wondering if that was my baby, and they made me think about the ethical issues. I had a medical and discussed the physical consequences.
Another mother of three, Clare York of Bradford, had a similarly positive experience. Unusually, she got to know the woman who received her eggs - and has a close relationship both this lady and with the little girl born as a result of her donation. According to Clare, 'It's definitely the best thing I've ever done.'
Egg donation has been practiced in the UK since 1984 and donors are still in great demand. Women who would like to volunteer need to meet certain criteria - for more information contact the National Gamete Donation Trust on 01706 829428 or see: www.hfea.gov.uk
It appears that Britain is unique in launching a 'no birth, no fee' IVF scheme, where would be parents do not have to pay the hefty costs so often associated with assisted conception whenever attempts are unsuccessful.
