Where as message and reflexology are very relaxing and unwinding for a mother there are other natural remedies such as Shiatsu which promote energy in the body for those times when you are feeling sluggish. A word of warning, though. Always get advice from a trained practitioner especially when pregnant, just because they are natural doesn’t mean they aren’t potent.

Where as massage and reflexology are very relaxing and unwinding for a mother there are other natural remedies such as Shiatsu which promote energy in the body for those times when you are feeling sluggish. A word of warning, though. Always get advice from a trained practitioner especially when pregnant, just because they are natural doesn’t mean they aren’t potent.

The right herbal remedies must be used to compliment the body and mind.

ACUPUNCTURE

A Chinese medicine to improve the flow of energy in the body using fine needles.

Acupuncturists believe that putting fine needles into certain parts of the body ‘meridians’ can increase or balance the energy flow in the body to make us feel healthy. It can help with many pregnancy ailments such as morning sickness and backache. However it would probably not be a suitable remedy for small children.

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

This technique aims to teach us how to ‘use’ ourselves everyday i.e. sitting and lifting.

The Alexander Technique shows you how to make simple movements more efficient so there are fewer stresses and strains on the body. The teacher will watch you do these simple everyday movements and then guide and show you how to do them in the more efficient way. It is a good remedy for backache, shoulder problems and fatigue.

AROMATHERAPY

The use of essential oils from plants for they’re healing benefits.

These essential oils can be applied to the skin with carrier oil such as almond oil or inhaled using burners. Each oil can aid and improve the health of the body and mind in different ways. For instance mandarin oil can help to ward off any stretchmarks before and after pregnancy.

HERBAL MEDICINE

The use of remedies extracted from plants to boost the body’s own healing powers.

Herbal remedies have many different uses. For instance chamomile is a soothing remedy and thyme is an effective antiseptic. Unlike some conventional medicines herbal medicine is safe and gentle for both you and your baby.

HOMEOPATHY

Remedies containing small traces of plants, minerals or animals to stimulate the bodies healing powers.

These remedies match particular sets of symptoms and are prescribed by a homeopath. It is about treating the whole body rather than isolated problems. Many compounds can be used to aid systems such as heartburn and varicose veins.

HYPNOTHERAPY

Being put into a stage of deep relaxation to focus on a positive outcome.

When being hypnotised one becomes deeply relaxed through breathing techniques with the help of the hypnotherapist. In this state the suggestions the hypnotherapist makes will be absorbed into your unconscious. Hypnotherapy can help people to give up smoking, get over phobias. It can help mothers before and after pregnancy to relieve anxiety and stress.

MASSAGE

The use of touch and pressure on the body to ease muscles into relaxation which inturn promotes blood flow to certain areas of the body and increases energy.

Message is good for when you or your child has muscular injury or discomfort. Through touching the area in certain ways the masseur can speed up the healing process.

OSTEOPATHY

This aims to get all bones and muscles working properly and in harmony with each other to avoid aches, pains and problems in the future

Using massage osteopaths manipulate joints, bones and muscles into the correct positions. It is a kind of mechanics on the body to make it ‘work’ better and more efficiently. It would be a good idea to take your children to see an osteopath to avoid problems in the future.

Signs that your baby may need to see an osteopath include irritability and difficulty in feeding. These problems can be caused by stress on the head, face throat and nerves. For babies the most effective treatment is cranio-sacral osteopathy which concentrates on the head and the back of the neck – those areas are most likely to have been affected during the birth.

REFLEXOLOGY

Aiding the healing process by putting pressure on the parts of the feet that correspond with the ailing parts of the body.

By putting pressure on parts of the feet the reflexologist can release blockages in the body, which cause problems. Reflexologists suggest patients visit them every six months even when healthy to ensure a constant feeling of well being.

SHIATSU

Based on principles of Chinese medicine Shiatsu is a therapeutic form of massage.

It works on a psychological level and is based on the belief (like so many other natural remedies) that illness is caused by blocked energy streams. It is the application of pressure on certain points of the body to relieve these blockages.

YOGA

A tension relieving form of slow exercise which promotes body suppleness and flexibility and it a perfect way to get back into shape having had your baby.

Yoga has many benefits such as increased oxygen to the blood and improved circulation. Yoga classes are very popular and would probably be available close to your home i.e. leisure and community centers.
